She is also advising on two research studies on how to increase screening rates for African American women. Reverend Pugh Mungo is also one of the founding members of the African American Task Force of Contra Cost County --- an organization that reaches out to the uninsured and underserved Women and helps provide them with resources as well as education. Maria Sousa noted that, “The Komen SF Bay Area “Hope and Inspiration Award” is given to a member of the San Francisco Bay Area community who through his or her efforts has provided hope and inspiration to breast cancer patients and survivors.  For her long and sustained personal dedication to educating her sisters in the African American community about the necessity of early detection; for her leadership in providing resources to underserved women and also access to clinical trials; for her longstanding advocacy for those fighting breast cancer, for the hope and inspiration she has provided numerous women and survivors, it is an honor to present the 2011 Komen SF Bay Area “ Hope and Inspiration” Award to the Reverend Jackie Pugh Mungo.” The event was also a chance to celebrate some of the Race for the Cure fundraising teams, some of which were headed by survivors present at the luncheon.
