The 22nd Annual Komen SF Race for the Cure
Sunday, September 9th, 2012 - 5K Run/Walk & 1 Mile Fun Walk
The 5K course is USATF certified.

Race Day Details

In 2012, Susan G. Komen for the Cure celebrates the 22nd Annual San Francisco Bay Area Race and, nationally, the 29th year of the Komen Race for the Cure, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, with well over 1 million participants since 2005. The Komen Race for the Cure Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.

2012 Race Day Timeline
7:30-8:30am Race Day Registration, T-Shirt & Timing Chip Pick-Up
9:00am 5K Timed Runners Start
Following the 9am Runner Start (approx 9:10am) 5K Walk & 1 Mile Fun Walk Start
10:15am Registered Survivors who wish to participate in the Survivor Tribute Ceremony meet at the Survivor Booth.
10:30am Survivor Tribute & Celebration, Survivor Group Photo
10:45am Awards Ceremony
9am-11am Health & Fitness Expo in Justin Herman Plaza

Special Survivor Awards
The top three to finish in the Survivor Division, the 1st place Master Survivor, and the 1st place Senior Survivor will receive commemorative crystal plaques engraved with their names.

Honor or commemorate a loved one at this year's Race by adding their name to Susan's Garden.  Their name will be prominently displayed on one of the paper flowers adorning the garden's arches.  Upon finding your loved one's name, you are free to take it with you or leave it on display for others to see.  Susan's Garden Tributes require a minimum donation of $10 per name.  

Location
Along the Embarcadero, starting by the Ferry Building. The 5K Run/Walk course heads to AT&T Park, over the 3rd Street bridge, turns around and heads back toward the Ferry Building, ending by the Ferry Building. The 1 Mile Fun Walk course heads in the opposite direction, toward Fisherman’s Wharf, and turns around after 1/2 mile to finish back at the Ferry Building.  

Directions to Race Start at the Ferry Building:
The Expo is taking place at Justin Herman Plaza which is located across from the Ferry Building, on the Embarcadero, at the corner of Market St. and Steuart St. in downtown San Francisco.

  • From the Peninsula on 280 North. Follow 280 North towards San Francisco until it ends into the Embarcadero. Follow the Embarcadero around until you see the Ferry Building on your right hand side. Justin Herman Plaza is across from the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero.
  • From the Peninsula on 101 North. Take the 280 North exit heading towards downtown San Francisco. Follow 280 North until it ends into the Embarcadero. Follow the Embarcadero around until you see the Ferry Building on your right hand side. Justin Herman Plaza is across from the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero.
  • From Marin on 101 South. Follow 101 South towards San Francisco and across the Golden Gate Bridge. Take the Marina Blvd. exit towards the Marina - go 0.3 mi. Bear right on Marina Blvd. - go 0.9 mi. Marina Blvd. becomes Laguna St. - go 0.1 mi. Turn left on Bay St. - go 1.4 mi. Bear right onto the Embarcadero - go 1.2 mi. Justin Herman Plaza is on your right side, across from the Ferry Building.
  • From the East Bay on I-80 West. Follow I-80 West towards San Francisco, across the Bay Bridge. Take the Harrison St. exit towards Embarcadero - go 0.3 mi. Continue on Fremont St. go 0.4 mi. Turn right on Mission St. - go 0.3 mi. Turn left on Steuart St. - go 0.1 mi. Justin Herman Plaza is on your right side.

Alternate Transportation:
Justin Herman Plaza, where the Race is staged, is very accessible by public transportation during Race Weekend.

  • www.bart.gov (Bay Area Rapid Transit)
    BART operates rail service in San Francisco and the East Bay. BART will be running their normal schedule and will be not be open until around 8am. Please check their web site for specific times. Justin Herman Plaza is located off of the Embarcadero Stop. Call 510-465-BART.
  • www.sfmuni.com (San Francisco Municipal Railway)
    Provides bus, streetcar, and cable car service in the City of San Francisco. Justin Herman Plaza is located off of the Embarcadero Stop. Call 415-6SF-MUNI.

Parking
There are 4 Embarcadero Center Garages.
The Embarcadero Center allow vehicles with 8 ft clearance and are open at 7 am on Sunday.
Street parking along Embarcadero is also available.  Please read signs accordingly and pay meters, as they are enforced on weekends.  


Buses, Trucks and Large Vehicles:
There are a few above ground parking lot options within blocks of the Race site location-- two north of the plaza, three south.   All are metered parking on weekends.
